I tried to sell a few bits on ebay recently, none of it made anything like what its worth, one lot was 3 Action men, Action men can fetch £5 or more each at a boot sale, our lot of 3, went for its opening bid price of 0.99p. We quoted £4 for postage. So total £4.99
The postage came to £4.25
paypal charges £0.37
ebay charges £0.05
so my profit on this item was £0.32, and the buyer is reporting that the item has not arrived, so I could end up having to refund the entire £4.99 couldn't I? I think they must be trying to have me over, it was posted 1st class.....what a waste of time, I should have chucked it in the bin and saved myself the grief.

People critisize me for selling a lot of my old toot on collection only basis.
It might make it harder to sell but saves a lot of agro' in the long run and saves the paypal fees because the buyer can pay COD.

I think there is something to be said for it!

Royal Mail are snowed under with parcels and packets at the moment. Everyone seems to have gone Ebay / Amazon / Play.com crazy this year.
In billericay we have 8 guys working late Saturday and all day Sunday to try and get them out. If Monday see's us get a load more on top of what may be left, a lot of people may have presents arriving on Thursday.

Its a token effort but i always put a disclaimer stating i have no control over the item once its posted, so if someone chooses standard delivery its down to them...( i offer standard and signed for delivery)

ive been moaning at a seller on ebay as im awaiting a gift for the in-laws for christmas which i was chuffed at winning..:reading
I bought the item on 13th of december so its been 9 days since i bought it, and therefore quite rightly, im asking where the hell my parcel is?:shooter
I managed to get all of my other parcels, ordered around the same time, within a week of purchase.. so what is this guys problem??
If you know theres problems with delivery times (something the seller said about the first time i complained) then purchase next day delivery or send a courier..
The sellers 'solution' was to post me another one out the next postal date (christmas eve) which ive now complained that the gift was bought EASILY in time for christmas so thats not ideal unless he gets same day delivery OR pays for a courier to get this gift delivered to me personally!:shooter

I think there is something to be said for it!
To be honest a lot of things I tend to sell are high (ish) value anyway and I wouldn't want to send in the post for fear of it getting damaged.
Earlier this year I got rid of some unwanted lenses off my slr I didn't want anymore. I would rather they collected so I can hook them up to the camera and show them working so there is no doubt about their condition.
I've had various problems waiting for things I've purchased before and sent out. Luckily they all turned up eventually in good condition but it could have turned out the other way.

It all depends of wether the seller is on the ball and get the item sent out straight away....most of the time thats not always possible, especially from a private seller rather than an ebay shop. so you were still cutting it a bit fine considering the final pot date for parcels through the post office was the 16th/17th i think.
As for purchasing next day delivery or courier, thats up to you as the buyer to pay for that, if youre unsure, then ask if the seller offers it if they havent listed it on the item description.
But there you go, lesson learned......next time get em early!!

Nope once the item has been posted it's not your problem anymore i've been down this route before & spoke to Ebay & thats exactly what they told me, as long as you have a receipt from the post office, courier it's nothing to worry about. it's down to the customer to chase it.

As a postie, I would recommend using the guaranteed next day delivery service wherever possible.
These items are handled differently to normal recorded deliveries ( orange labels ).
Normal recordeds are sent with standard parcels and these come to us piled in big trolleys weighing up to 250Kgs. A number of parcels are damaged by the time they get to us in billericay - crushed etc. Normal recordeds are not scanned in and out of buildings so it's impossible to trace them.
Blue special deliveries are scanned at each office so we can see where they are at any time. If a special fails to turn up, we can see what the last known location was. Also, these are moved in seperate bags and trolleys to all other mail and parcels and are very rarely damaged due to the handling and sorting proceedures which are all by hand, not machine.
When buying from anywhere on the net, if the option to send by Next Day Guaranteed is there and it's financially viable - use it. Plus you're automatically insured ( £500 included or up to £2500 for a fee) if it is damaged or lost.
Not to sound like an advert - I've bought and sold and get to see things from the inside.

Or you could only buy stuff you can see, touch and haggle over, then take it home carefully wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap, shouting 'make way' at regular intervals.
well my parcel still hasnt arrived, so i can see stuff arriving thursday.. hope fully.:shooter

I alway have a disclaimer for postal services --BUT .. I do alway get a *receipt* of postage ....................... and if a buyer wants recorded -0
r next day then they pay the extra for the service ...
I am trying to persuade most of my buyers to use Bank Tranfer now -- its free just takes 3 days . and the only details you give out are just what is on your cheque book --so they can pay money into your account but no way can money be taken out

Well ive just read that theres over 2 million parcels that are not going to be delivered in time for christmas..:reading
my question is why?:shooter
Royal mail obviously know that people are going to post over christmas/holiday periods and should make ammendments to their working practice.. i mean its not rocket science and it dont take a genius to work out that theres going to more people posting gifts out on christmas...:angrypun
my solution would be double deliveries.. pay the workers overtime and get more parcels shipped out, so if need be, you can get two parcels on the same day one in the morning and another in the afternoon?:reading
What annoys me most, isn't the fact that I havent received one of my gifts, but more the fact that we posted a big parcel of silly gifts over to lee (superstacker) who unfortunately is serving the christmas period in Afghanistan, so we sent that 7th December, 1st class marked urgent and everything.. and he still hasnt received it.. so it looks like hes not only spending christmas alone in a foreign country, but now hes spending it WITHOUT any of his gifts..
Thanks Royal Mail!!!:shooter

It's the same every year but over the last 3 it's just gone mad.
Edinburgh mail centre hired 24 transit vans to help get parcels out. Thing is...they forgot to hire 24 van drivers to drive them. Duh!!!
With regards to paying overtime, we have been on overtime for 3 weeks. So we work 5am to 4pm - we can't stay out in the dark. Trouble is, we have more parcels than we ( billericay ) can handle at the moment. The van drivers are out from 7am until 4pm and they can only deliver so much, plus they can only deliver what comes to billericay in the first place.
Short-sightedness on royal mail managements part completely. They try to cut costs as much as possible and the service suffers.
