View Full Version : TLR out of luck (again)

My TLR defied all physical laws and fell over in the back of a van on the way to (ironically) my repair garage.

This has left me needing a new screen brace (welding the current one wouldn't turn out pretty) and less importantly a new double-bubble screen. The left side of the nose fairing where the mirror attaches also snapped off, but can be plastic welded.

So....if anyone has a spare screen brace could you let me know please?
The screen would be good too, but I'm not too fussed at the mo about that.

Thanks,

Ant

So if its not broken down. Due to lack of elacsticty then its falling over. I sometimes get the feeling I shouldnt own bikes but sometimes I read other peoples luck(or lack of it) and sometimes feel a bit better. So thats more cost to get the repairs that didnt need doing in the first place.

Sods blooming luck or what!!!!

that is just bad luck mate! i think you should leave the bike in your garage! (with pillows either side!)

i'm confused!! i've never had a bike fall off a trailer or fall over in a van.... so how are you strapping them down??? not with skyhooks i hope???:laugh1

The bike was tied down with a 10 tonne ship's anchor either side...and the wheels were welded to the van's chassis.... (I wish).

Had 1 hench strap (wratchet type) across the seat and down to fixing points on the floor diagonally.
The front wheel was also tied to one side at full lock.
The front brake was kept on with a shoelace round the lever (nice touch I thought.)

However, took a sharp left turn and the bike pivoted over the sidestand (which didn't break) and smacked into the van wall.

This resulted on me n my dad tryin to get the straps undone in double quick time...n getting about 230kg of bike to pivot back over the sidestand upright again. Fun fun eh?

Last but not least, my garage have looked at the bike today n found there's sumthin not right internally with the front cylinder, and theres not enough compression on the rear one.
Starter mechanism was fine all along.

This is looking expensive i think...

hi Ant just to let you know that there is a TLR engine on ebay at the mo for £650 it might work out about the same price good luck mate

Cheers Mick..I just saw that engine myself....BUT...I now don't need anything for my engine!!:jumping2 .... my mechanic had a further look and found it wasnt turning over by hand very well because the fuel injector cut switch had been activated by the bike falling over in the van. He had the bike running sweet as half hour ago!!!:laugh2:laugh2:laugh2

All he reckons I need is a new reg-rec as the replacement 2nd hand one I got off ebay isn't working quite as well as it should.

Only problem I have now really is the £92.50 price Suzuki want to charge me for a new screen brace...all I can say is that they're not mugging me off with that price for a few ally bars welded together.

So all in all..happy days!!

Tooey can go back to being the one with bad luck again :grin2

Bit of a result there ant vaz!
Saved yourself a few quid there.
Suzuki are a joke, tried to charge me £135 for one rhs fake plastic carbon ram air duct.Found one on ebay for £25 instead.
If you need to order parts for your tlr these are worth a try.
Used them for bits & pieces when I smashed my bike and they deliver on time with no bull, quality service.
Harris do a screen brace and are usually expensive but worth a look.
Cant remember what I paid for mine but it was less then £92

well next time you tie it down dont go over the seat you describe the same method as i use the only difference is that i wrap the strap around the subframe under the seat with an over, under, over, then down to the floorwith a rag covering the plastics!!

ant_vaz

Yeah that does sound like a better idea dogbot, but I can't picture offhand if the underseat area has any room around the reg-rec tray to get straps around the subframe.
I'll take a look when I next make a trip to see my bike at the garage...but hopefully it'll never need to go in the back of a van again!!
Cheers for the help...:clap

Ant,
you still needing a screen brace?
Does anyone knows whether a TLS screen brace is the same as a TLR??

If it is then i have one for you, as just stripped a TLS.

Gaz

Hi Gaz...Im pretty certain a TLS brace won't fit, as it has a different frame to the TLR. I thought a GSXR 750 one might fit, as it had the same frame in '99, but I've gone and ordered a new TLR one from Suzuki anyway (£90...ouch)

Cheers for the offer, shame my bike's awkward :laugh2

Yes didn't think it would fit, but been a while since i seen a TLR so cant remember what the brace looks like. Good luck finding one, sure you will be able to source one cheaper than the new price eventually. Maybe try Partfinder?? Goes to over 200 breakers daily.

Got to be one out there somewhere, second hand in good condition!!

Looks swish Jim...only problem is if I get a polished brace I WILL want everything to be chromed on the TLR :laugh1...my wallet is therefore staying shut. Cheers for the link tho...I'll keep the thought in the back of mind for now :grin2

Should hear your Tl about then!
Where do you get the fairing plastic welded?
Was it local as I need some welding done on the gixxer.
Was it the place behind tesco express at leigh?

Heard some good stuff about them.
Mate used them for some minor repair work for a van.
Being nosey now but how much did he charge & how long did he take?

Took about an hour...charged £76.32 (thats inc. vat)

Had to wait an hour to let the welder to warm up, so it's not really a while-u-wait job
