View Full Version : Cheapest/Best Rear Shocks
Hey guys,
Discovered today that one of my rear shocks is leaking, and after consulting the manual the whole unit needs replacing..:shooter
So my question is what ones would you recommend?:grin2
is there a make i should avoid..? i found these on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220189155237
What do you think?? atm the bikes got the standard air/oil dampened suspension, but its leaking and ive never liked them anyway ;)
Secondly, can anyone tell me whether the front brake light switch from a GT550 G7 (1991-) would be ok to fit on a G4 (1989) as wemoto does not list a pattern one for G4 but it does for G7?:headbash

Another one for Hagon.....
thanks for the input, done a bit of homework and found hagons are good to some and bad to others..:reading
And seeing as im on a budget, have rather decided to spend 100 quid on everything rather than just the shocks ;)
Economy shock this time.. maybe a hagon if it dont work well:grin2

what do you mean good to some bad to other's???i'm confused tooey!!!
you ring them up drop off ur shock if thay have 1 there they give you that 1 you pay an every1 is happy! they then rebuild your shock & sell it to sum1 else......... if they dont have a shock for you already built you have to wait a week or so.... no good or bad in it...
AND talking to a mate who worked at hagons you would only need a pair of type "A" ROAD shocks @ £101.50ish!!!!! thats a quality brand & garanteed for a good while tooo!!!

I wouldnt put a hagon on a sports bike, for the specific reason that sports bike needs full adjustability to get the full benefit of the suspension,
However Hagon are well respected for pretty much every bike out there (again apart from sport related bikes, and that includes crossers and such like).
You want performance suspension then you go for Ohlins/WP/Penske blah blah
You want uprated suspension matched to your weight and bike then you go for Hagon.
You want a budget shock, expect a budget ride ;)
Suspension is what keep your tyres in contact with the ground ;)

they do have adjustable shocks in their range but what you are saying is entierly correct for instance a hagon adjustable monoshock for my gixxer is £255 whearas an ohlins is £450+ the performance is with the ohlins without doubt!!
however we are talking about tooey's twin shock gt550 here is where hagon will come into their own he'll get a great pair of shocks that will last him for ages for about the same money as he's going to blow on a budget pair!

With all due respect its not about the same price, the Oxon ones hes seen on ebay are half the price of Hagons, but you get what you pay for, if you just want cheap and legal the Oxons fit the bill, if you want the best get Ohlins or similar, somewhere in between comes Hagon, its horses for courses and cut your cloth according to your wossisname.
As long as Tooey realises that at £45 for the Oxons he is not going to get the same product as the Hagons at £100

I got a hagon mono shock on mine and it works a treat Hagon front springs and they are really good they do twin shock set ups.
i truly reccommend them as they are cheap and very good
I asked for them to be set up for the track so they made them with a bit more adjusterbility and to my specific weight.
For a cheap alternative to top of the range ohlins etc they do the job very well.
I set the statiuc sag and never had to change them for snetterton brands or rockingham
Im doing cadwell soon so may have to have a tweak
To say they are no good for sports bikes is wrong unless your a racer then ohlins etc is the best
Like i said i have hagons and they are the ****** even for my track days, and im not the sort to pussy about on track

Of course i realise that..
However, ill make a safe bet that these cheap oxons are going to be a fair bit better than the knackered shocks that are on the bike at the moment.
Ill upgrade to Hagons should i find a problem with the oxons etc, but atm.. im running out of funds quickly.. and am trying to save myself some money:grin2

Erm....isnt that a bit pointless if youre trying to save money, why run the risk of spending out on shocks that MAY not be any good only to then fork out AGAIN for a set, when you could just get some shocks that WILL work and not have to worry again!
Its this penny pinching on the important stuff that causes all your problems....not once have you done or bought something that works!
Sorry but its got to be said............ here we go again!!!!!

Hagons come with a guarantee too.

Perhaps i should of rephrased that..
I NEED shocks on my bike and havent got a steady income atm, which is why i cant spend so much on the shocks alone, i just dont have the funds, yet when i do, if the shocks aren't any good (no reason why not?) then i will go for the hagons.
Instead ive gone for a cheaper set of shocks, which should do the job fine, and been able to sort out the rest of the bike which the cash saved (mini-service that it needed anyway).
